Michigan AG Under Fire for Allegedly Misleading Public About Voter Fraud Investigation
A law enforcement whistleblower has come forward with claims that Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel never referred a major 2020 voter fraud investigation to the FBI, despite publicly stating otherwise. The case involves GBI Strategies that I wrote about, a Democrat-aligned voter registration operation alleged to have submitted thousands of suspicious and fraudulent applications in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election.
A Deepening Scandal
While Nessel previously announced that her office had referred the matter to federal authorities and claimed this was evidence that “the system worked,” internal law enforcement sources now contradict that narrative. According to one senior official, the Attorney General’s office shut down its own investigation and never formally passed the case to the FBI.
Michigan State Police reportedly seized a substantial amount of evidence from GBI Strategies’ operations, including voter applications, documents, and hard drives. But the whistleblower says that the investigation was quietly closed after Nessel determined that the fraud was financially motivated and not “election-related,” thereby justifying a decision not to prosecute.

Pattern of Deception
Despite public statements suggesting otherwise, sources say the FBI only selectively requested access to specific elements of the case related to other federal matters — not to take over the full investigation. This partial involvement appears to have been used by Nessel’s office to justify claiming the case was in federal hands.
Further complicating matters, investigators allegedly uncovered that GBI Strategies was uploading voter registration data to a shared cloud platform accessible by its national network and potentially other Democrat-aligned organizations. This raises serious questions about whether the data was being exploited for broader partisan strategies, not just financial gain.
Law enforcement officials claim attempts to investigate deeper were met with limited cooperation, including from local election officials and clerks who appeared disinterested in following up on thousands of dubious voter applications.
A Troubling Legal Environment
Michigan lawmakers are now voicing concern. Rep. Rachelle Smit, Chair of the House Election Integrity Committee, confirmed that her committee is actively investigating the claims. She noted the serious implications of a state attorney general misrepresenting the status of a major election-related investigation, particularly while prosecuting 2020 alternate electors with felony charges.
Legal experts point out that if Nessel withheld FOIA documents under the claim of an “ongoing investigation,” while the case was in fact closed, it could constitute a violation of public transparency laws — and possibly obstruction of justice.
The entire situation has prompted renewed calls for a legislative inquiry into the Michigan Attorney General’s conduct during and after the 2020 election.
