Massive Document Release Sheds Light on Kennedy’s Assassination
The ongoing quest for answers surrounding one of the 20th century’s most analyzed political assassinations—the shooting of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963—took another turn Tuesday night with the release of more than 31,000 pages from the National Archives.
The release, ordered by President Donald Trump, is part of a broader effort to declassify documents related to Kennedy’s killing. While the National Archives has already disclosed most of the 6 million pages of assassination-related records, this latest batch can be found on the agency’s website under the headline, “JFK Assassination Records – 2025 Documents Release.”
A Post analysis reveals that, although these files are not newly discovered, many redactions have been lifted, potentially providing further insights into the circumstances surrounding JFK’s death.

What the Documents Reveal
Most of the National Archives’ online records related to the assassination are also available on the Mary Ferrell Foundation’s website, a research group dedicated to JFK’s assassination. The foundation’s president, Rex Bradford, emphasized that each new release contributes additional pieces to the historical puzzle.
“The Kennedy assassination is a continuous process of uncovering new revelations,” Bradford said. “Each document unpeeled adds depth to our understanding of Cold War history and the circumstances leading to Kennedy’s death.”
Historians and researchers are particularly interested in the CIA’s surveillance of Lee Harvey Oswald in Mexico City, propaganda operations related to Oswald, and Kennedy’s growing mistrust of the intelligence community in the months leading up to his assassination.

Trump’s Push for Full Disclosure
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields, speaking to NewsNation, described the document release as historic, hinting that the contents could surprise the public.
“The American people will have their hands on these documents, and there will be a story to tell,” Fields said. “I won’t spoil that story, but let me say this—people will be shocked.”
On Monday, Trump confirmed that “all of the Kennedy files” would be released the following day. “We have a tremendous amount of paper. You’ve got a lot of reading. I don’t believe we’re going to redact anything,” Trump stated.
However, ABC News reported that Trump’s declaration triggered an overnight scramble within the Justice Department, with national security attorneys reviewing the documents for potential risks to national security.

Conflicting Narratives and the Lone Gunman Theory
Philip Shenon, author of A Cruel and Shocking Act, examined many of the documents but found little that altered his understanding of the assassination. Much of the material, he noted, remains challenging to interpret due to coded names and cryptic references.
“We’ve seen virtually all of these documents before with redactions, but I can’t instantly tell you what’s new,” Shenon said. “It’s always possible that something groundbreaking is hidden in these pages, but serious researchers will need weeks or months to properly analyze them.”
JFK assassination historian Jefferson Morley contends that the latest files further contradict the findings of the 1964 Warren Commission, which concluded that Oswald acted alone. “The lone gunman theory doesn’t hold up,” Morley argued. “The medical professionals who treated Kennedy said gunfire came from two different directions. We need a better explanation of what really happened.”

CIA Surveillance of Oswald and Mexico City Connections
According to recent findings, the CIA had been monitoring Oswald for four years before the assassination. Declassified records show that key intelligence officials, including CIA Director Allen Dulles and counterintelligence chief James Angleton, worked to control the Warren Commission’s investigation, raising concerns about whether critical information was withheld.
Shenon and other experts are particularly interested in files concerning Oswald’s time in Mexico City, where he reportedly met with Cuban and Soviet intelligence officials weeks before the assassination. New records may reveal additional contacts between Oswald and foreign operatives.
“If newly unredacted documents show Oswald was in direct contact with individuals who wanted Kennedy dead, that could suggest a larger conspiracy,” Shenon said. “That wouldn’t be the kind of conspiracy people typically imagine, but it could still be a criminal conspiracy if others were aware of Oswald’s intentions.”
Public Demands for Answers
The release of these documents follows a decades-long demand for transparency. The 1992 Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act mandated the full disclosure of assassination-related files by 2017, but past administrations have delayed full declassification, citing national security concerns.
With thousands of documents still containing redactions, researchers hope this latest release brings them closer to a complete picture of what transpired on that fateful day in Dallas.
“The American people deserve the truth,” Morley said. “This case is still open in the minds of the public, and as long as new documents surface, we will continue to question what really happened to President Kennedy.”
