A Manufactured Threat

The 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was initially presented as a clear-cut case of domestic terrorism, with federal and state prosecutors claiming a group of extremists had conspired to abduct her due to her COVID-19 policies. However, as the trials unfolded, a disturbing truth emerged: the FBI was not merely investigating the plot—it was actively involved in orchestrating it.

Court proceedings revealed that FBI informants and undercover agents played a central role in encouraging, funding, and even leading aspects of the plot. Testimony and evidence showed that informants manipulated the defendants, sometimes pushing reluctant individuals toward illegal actions they had not previously considered. In multiple instances, the government’s own witnesses admitted that key figures in the case were paid informants who drove the planning and escalation of the scheme.

Despite these shocking revelations, the response from Michigan’s political leadership has been silence, particularly when it comes to demanding accountability from those involved at the highest levels.

The Failure of Michigan’s Legislature

One would expect Michigan’s legislators to demand answers from both Governor Whitmer and FBI Director Christopher Wray. The FBI’s involvement in this case raises serious concerns about entrapment, the abuse of federal power, and the targeting of political narratives for manipulation. Likewise, Whitmer’s continued use of the incident for political gain—despite the evidence of FBI orchestration—warrants scrutiny.

Yet, the Michigan Legislature has failed to act. There have been no public hearings where Whitmer or Wray have been required to answer tough questions about what they knew and when they knew it. Efforts to convene committees for further investigation have been blocked or ignored, leaving the public with unanswered concerns about the extent of government overreach and political influence in law enforcement operations.

Why Accountability Matters

The Whitmer case is not just about one FBI operation; it represents a broader issue of federal agencies interfering in domestic affairs under the guise of national security. If the FBI was willing to entrap individuals in a high-profile case like this, it raises questions about how many other cases have been similarly manipulated to justify political narratives.

Meanwhile, Governor Whitmer has continued to portray herself as a victim of right-wing extremism, using the botched case to bolster her political standing. By refusing to testify before a legislative committee, she has avoided addressing the legitimate concerns surrounding her involvement and the government’s handling of the case.

The failure of Michigan legislators to demand accountability from Whitmer and Wray is a dereliction of duty. Their refusal to investigate the FBI’s role in this operation sends a dangerous message: government agencies can manufacture threats, influence political outcomes, and escape scrutiny.

The Path Forward

The Michigan Legislature must take immediate action to restore trust in government institutions. At the very least, it should demand testimony from both Governor Whitmer and FBI Director Wray. Subpoenas should be issued, and a full-scale investigation into FBI entrapment should be launched. If lawmakers continue to ignore this, they will be complicit in allowing federal overreach to go unchecked.

The Whitmer kidnapping case is a textbook example of why transparency and accountability are essential in a democracy. The people of Michigan—and the nation—deserve answers.
