Did Whitmer’s Campaign Violations Get Buried? The Story the Media Won’t Cover

Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s tenure has been marred by multiple campaign finance controversies, raising questions about transparency and accountability within Michigan’s political landscape. Despite the gravity of these issues, mainstream media outlets have largely remained silent, leaving citizens uninformed about potential violations and a lack of accountability from the Michigan legislature.

Chartered Flight Controversy

In 2021, Governor Whitmer faced scrutiny for using campaign funds to pay for a chartered flight for non-state-related travel. The Michigan Department of State concluded that this expenditure was permissible, citing credible threats to her safety. However, critics argue this sets a concerning precedent for the misuse of campaign funds under the guise of security concerns.

Excessive Campaign Contributions Amid Recall Efforts

During various recall efforts against Whitmer, her campaign accepted donations exceeding standard contribution limits, totaling over $3.7 million. While state law permits higher contributions during recall campaigns, the substantial funds raised were later transferred to the Michigan Democratic Party, raising ethical questions about the circumvention of campaign finance limits.

Coordination with Build a Better Michigan

In 2018, the group Build a Better Michigan (BBM), aligned with Whitmer, was found to have violated state campaign finance laws by engaging in express advocacy without proper disclosure. Despite spending over $2.7 million supporting Whitmer, BBM faced a minimal fine of $37,500 and agreed to dissolve—an insufficient penalty given the scale of the violation.

Michigan Legislature Failing to Hold Whitmer Accountable

The Michigan Legislature has done little to hold Whitmer accountable for numerous scandals that have rocked the state:

  • FBI Kidnapping Plot – The supposed plot against Whitmer was riddled with FBI entrapment, yet legislators have refused to demand transparency into the FBI’s possible role in manufacturing the case.

  • Missing COVID Relief Money – Millions in federal COVID-19 relief funds allocated to Michigan remain unaccounted for, yet the legislature has failed to demand a full forensic audit.

  • Nursing Home Death Cover-Up – Whitmer’s administration forced COVID-positive patients into nursing homes, leading to unknown numbers of preventable deaths—yet the legislature has taken no action to investigate this scandal.

Rather than demanding answers and holding hearings, Michigan lawmakers have turned a blind eye, allowing the governor to operate with impunity.

This is why I wrote:

Cutting Michigan Government Waste: Why It’s Time to Eliminate Full-Time Legislators

Will Rep. Angela Rigas Finally Put Pressure on Whitmer?

The newly appointed Chair of the Weaponization of State Government Committee, Rep. Angela Rigas, now has a unique opportunity to start demanding real accountability from Whitmer and her administration. For five years, the legislature has done nothing, allowing Whitmer to operate without oversight. Now, Rigas could pressure her colleagues to subpoena the governor and force her to answer for these scandals.

Additionally, Rep. Rigas also sits on the Michigan House Oversight Committee, giving her another avenue to bring Whitmer in for questioning. This committee has the authority to investigate corruption, subpoena witnesses, and demand documents, yet for years, it has failed to act. If Rigas and other lawmakers are serious about holding Whitmer accountable, they need to use their investigative powers to expose the full extent of her corruption.

Whitmer’s Office: A Weapon Against the People

Whitmer has repeatedly used her office for personal political gain while going unchecked by Michigan’s legislature. From abusing campaign finance laws to shady deals with donors, her administration has acted like a political machine designed to protect her interests rather than serve the people.

Whether it’s dodging questions about her nursing home policy, avoiding scrutiny over mismanaged COVID relief funds, or remaining silent on the FBI’s role in the so-called kidnapping plot, Whitmer’s pattern of secrecy and lack of accountability is undeniable.

The question now is: Will Rep. Angela Rigas and her committee finally do something about it?

Lack of Media Coverage

These incidents highlight a pattern of potential ethical lapses within Michigan’s political sphere. However, mainstream media’s reluctance to extensively cover these controversies undermines the public’s ability to hold elected officials accountable. This selective reporting fosters a culture where Democratic leaders operate without scrutiny, eroding public trust in state institutions.

Conclusion: A Failing System That Protects the Powerful

The media’s failure to investigate these major scandals, combined with the legislature’s refusal to act, has created a system that protects corrupt politicians while taxpayers suffer.

With Rep. Angela Rigas now in a position to take action, Michigan voters must demand real investigations and accountability. Until real pressure is applied, Governor Whitmer and her allies will continue to escape justice, leaving Michigan citizens to wonder: Where is the oversight?
