LANSING, MI – As Michigan’s infrastructure continues to crumble, the state Senate’s latest symbolic resolution in support of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers and citizens alike. Critics argue that the continued emphasis on DEI spending reflects an out-of-touch government more focused on virtue signaling than fixing roads or ensuring safe drinking water.

On March 18, 2025 the Senate resolution, backed by all Democrats in a narrow 19-18 vote, encourages all levels of government, schools, and workplaces to adopt DEI policies. While supporters claim it’s a declaration of values, opponents call it an expensive distraction. “This resolution isn’t about unity,” said Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt. “It’s division dressed up as progress.”

Senator Jim Runestad (R)

Sen. Jim Runestad, R-White Lake, went further, warning that promoting “equity” instead of “equality” reflects a mindset obsessed with outcomes rather than opportunity. “When you are focused on resolutions promoting DEI instead of addressing the massive academic underperformance of our students or the fentanyl crisis, you might just be out of touch with the priorities of the people here in the state of Michigan,” he said.

Although this specific resolution does not allocate new funding, its endorsement of DEI raises serious concerns about future financial commitments. Past and ongoing DEI-related spending across the state already totals over $50 million—resources critics argue could be far better used elsewhere.

This issue was explored in my in-depth article:

DOGE on Michigan Wasteful Spending: LGBTQ, DEI, and Transgender Study Funds Could Fix the Roads Instead!

LANSING, MI – After publishing Shocking Waste: Federal Audit Uncovers Billions Wasted on Foreign Social Programs and hearing growing calls from the public to “DOGE Michigan,” I decided to investigate our state’s own misuse of taxpayer dollars. Here’s what I uncovered:

Notable Expenditures:

1. University of Michigan’s DEI Bureaucracy – Over $30 million in 2024 alone to staff 241 DEI employees. Critics say this money is being used to push ideological agendas over academic excellence. (New York Post)

2. Michigan State University’s DEI-Driven Spending – $300,000 in “inclusive excellence” grants and $45.2 million in diverse supplier spending. (MSU Inclusion)

3. Statewide LGBTQ+ Initiatives – Workshops in schools and other programming viewed by critics as introducing controversial topics at the expense of parental input. (Michigan.gov)

4. Funding for Transgender Studies

  • $532,185 NIH grant to the University of Michigan for testosterone research on male rats.

  • $60,000 NEH fellowship at MSU to study transgender reproductive history. (AAAS, MSU Sociology)

5. HOPE Fund Grants – $2.5 million in grants to LGBTQ+ nonprofits through the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. (CFSEM)

6. State Budget Allocation for LGBTQ+ Health Disparities – $10 million in the 2023–2024 budget to address health disparities. (Michigan Senate Democrats)

7. MSU Multicultural Center – A $38 million project intended as a “sanctuary” for DEI-related student groups. (Michigan Senate Democrats)

Total Known Expenditures: Over $50.5 Million

These numbers only scratch the surface, as many DEI-related expenses are buried in opaque budgets and third-party grants. Nonetheless, the public is increasingly alarmed by what appears to be an ideological money-laundering operation disguised as inclusion.

The Bigger Picture

The Michigan Senate’s ongoing support of DEI stands in sharp contrast to the state’s crumbling infrastructure. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, 11% of Michigan bridges are structurally deficient and over $16 billion is needed for drinking water infrastructure.

Instead of channeling millions into politically charged programs, Michigan could be funding road repairs, clean water projects, or enhancing public safety and education. The government’s choice to champion DEI over these tangible needs reveals a troubling set of priorities.

Combining these wasteful expenditures with a proposal to support part-time legislation in an article I wrote: Cutting Michigan Government Waste: Why It’s Time to Eliminate Full-Time Legislators, the state could save billions in taxpayer money.

As public outrage grows, it’s becoming increasingly clear: it’s time for Michigan’s leadership to get back to basics—and put taxpayer dollars where they actually make a difference.
