Board Rejects Common-Sense Reforms
In yet another display of blatant disregard for conservative leadership, the Michigan State Board of Education has openly opposed President Donald Trump’s executive orders aimed at restoring fairness and fiscal responsibility in public education. On Tuesday, the Democrat-controlled board passed a resolution condemning the Trump administration’s efforts to defund radicalized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs that have turned schools into ideological battlegrounds instead of centers for academic excellence.
Trump’s initiative to eliminate wasteful spending in education, including redirecting funds away from politically motivated DEI programs and unnecessary bureaucracy, was met with predictable outrage from the leftist board members. Instead of acknowledging the need for reform, the Michigan Board of Education chose to push misleading narratives, claiming that Trump’s orders would “jeopardize education funding” and harm “low-income, special education, and at-risk students.”
Prioritizing Ideology Over Education
State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh, a staunch advocate of identity politics, decried the decision as an attack on vulnerable students. “Some would suggest that we accept these changes without question, but let’s be clear—this type of change is not an evolution of policy, it is a dismantling of opportunity,” Pugh said, conveniently ignoring how DEI programs often promote division rather than real educational improvement.
The resolution, predictably, passed along party lines, with all Democratic board members voting in favor and Republican Tom McMillin standing as one of the lone voices of reason by voting against it. Nikki Snyder, another Republican board member, refused to participate in what was clearly a partisan spectacle. Snyder had attempted to introduce a more pressing amendment supporting Trump’s executive order to keep biological males out of female sports—a common-sense move that was shot down by Democrats determined to push their radical social agenda.
Controversy Over Transgender Athletes
During the discussion, state school Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice dismissed concerns about transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports, downplaying the issue by citing that there were only two transgender runners currently competing at the high school level. McMillin, however, rightfully pointed out that the issue isn’t about present numbers—it’s about maintaining fairness in the future. “I don’t care if there’s one or two or none right now or whenever, but we’re talking about the future,” McMillin said. “This is very simple. You either support boys playing against girls in girls’ sports, or you don’t.”
Board member and former state senator Marshall Bullock (D-Detroit) scoffed at Snyder’s amendment, dismissing it as political maneuvering while conveniently ignoring the political nature of the board’s own resolution. “I get the political play. You guys can play that all day. I’m good at it, but it’s almost insulting to add it because the resolution is about everyone,” Bullock said, attempting to justify the board’s defiance of Trump’s commonsense policies.
Refusing to Put Students First
Dr. Pugh further framed the board’s decision as a moral stand against what she called an “attack” on education. “We refuse to stand by while students lose access to funding for their education and while our government is dismantled piece by piece,” Pugh declared, as if opposing left-wing indoctrination equates to dismantling government.
Ironically, within hours of the board’s virtue-signaling resolution, the U.S. Department of Education announced it would be reducing its bloated bureaucracy by cutting over 1,300 staff positions, with 600 employees voluntarily accepting buyouts. This decisive action, long overdue, is part of Trump’s broader effort to make education funding more efficient and to ensure resources are directed where they are truly needed—toward students and teachers, not activist-driven policies.

Misplaced Priorities in Education
In an additional attempt to pander to progressive agendas, the board also passed a resolution supporting mandatory music instruction for elementary school children, despite Michigan already facing dire educational challenges. Instead of prioritizing basic literacy and math proficiency—where students continue to struggle—Democrats on the board chose to focus on feel-good policies that do little to address the real issues plaguing public education.
The Michigan State Board of Education has once again demonstrated its unwillingness to put students and families first. By prioritizing DEI over real education reform, dismissing the integrity of female sports, and fighting against much-needed budgetary cuts, the board has made it clear that it serves partisan interests rather than Michigan’s students. While Trump takes bold steps to restore accountability in education, Michigan’s education leaders continue to cling to their failed progressive agenda, leaving students to suffer the consequences.
The resolution passed by the Michigan State Board of Education is largely symbolic and does not have the legal authority to override Trump’s executive order. Here’s why:
Lack of Federal Authority – The Michigan Board of Education operates at the state level and cannot prevent the federal government from enforcing its policies, including halting funding to schools that continue DEI programs. Executive orders from the president apply to federal funding, and if Trump’s order mandates cutting funds to schools promoting DEI, Michigan schools will face funding cuts regardless of what the board resolves.
Political Posturing – The resolution serves as a public statement rather than a policy change. It signals the board’s opposition to Trump’s order but does nothing to change the reality that schools defying the executive order risk losing federal funding.
State vs. Federal Funding – The board’s best move to counteract Trump’s policy would be to find state-level funding to replace potential lost federal dollars. However, Michigan’s budget is limited, and replacing federal education funds would be difficult, if not impossible, without major tax increases or budget reallocations.
Legal Challenges – The resolution might be used as part of a broader legal challenge against Trump’s executive order, arguing that cutting funds over DEI restrictions is unconstitutional. However, executive orders on education funding have legal precedent (such as Trump’s previous orders on Title IX and CRT bans), making such a challenge difficult.
Bottom Line:
The resolution does not stop Trump’s executive order. It is a political move designed to push back publicly, but unless Michigan schools comply with the order, they will face federal funding consequences. The board is essentially daring the Trump administration to enforce the cuts, hoping for legal battles or alternative funding solutions.
Democrats are sick!
