As we approach the spring and summer of 2025, several indicators suggest a potential increase in protests and civil unrest across the United States. Key factors contributing to this outlook include policy changes under the current administration, grassroots movements advocating for social and economic justice, and reactions to a misperceived authoritarian shift in governance.

National Park Protests

A coalition known as Resistance Rangers, comprising over 1,000 off-duty National Park Service employees, has organized demonstrations at more than 90 national parks nationwide. These protests respond to staffing cuts, hiring delays, and funding freezes implemented by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The group argues that these reductions disrupt park operations and conservation efforts, particularly with the busy summer season approaching.  SFGATE

Grassroots organizations are promoting initiatives like the “Economic Blackout,” a 24-hour consumer spending boycott protesting the influence of billionaires, large corporations, and political entities on working Americans. Participants are encouraged to refrain from making any purchases during the boycott period.

50501 Movement

The 50501 Movement, standing for “50 protests, 50 states, one movement,” has organized nationwide demonstrations opposing policies and actions of the current administration. These protests have seen thousands gather at state capitols and city halls, advocating for issues such as the reinstatement of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, protection of minority rights, and the removal of certain political figures from office. The movement’s widespread reach indicates a substantial level of organization and public engagement.

Demonstrations have occurred outside institutions like the Heritage Foundation, protesting “Project 2025,” a set of initiatives associated with the current administration.

Potential for Increased Political Violence

Analyses from organizations such as Control Risks highlight a rising trend in political violence, with lone actors posing unique security challenges. Geopolitical, economic, environmental, and social crises—often amplified online—are creating new pathways for radicalization. This environment may lead to unpredictable and difficult-to-prevent violent incidents.Control Risks

Government Assessments

The Department of Homeland Security’s 2025 Threat Assessment indicates that domestic violent extremists may view a wide range of targets associated with elections as viable for violence. This assessment underscores the intent of such actors to instill fear among voters, candidates, and election workers, thereby disrupting electoral processes.U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Conclusion

Considering these developments, it is plausible to anticipate an escalation in protests and potential civil unrest during the upcoming spring and summer months. The convergence of policy dissatisfaction, economic grievances, and concerns over democratic integrity are likely to fuel public demonstrations.
