LANSING, MI – After writing Shocking Waste: Federal Audit Uncovers Billions Wasted on Foreign Social Programs  And seeing countless people on social media say, “We need DOGE in Michigan,” I decided to DOGE Michigan’s wasteful spending—here’s what I uncovered.

Michigan’s state government has funneled millions into Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and LGBTQ+ programs, raising concerns about wasteful spending, political favoritism, and potential misuse of taxpayer funds. Critics argue that these initiatives serve as a means to bankroll political activism and fuel societal division rather than addressing tangible issues affecting Michigan residents. Below is an overview of some of the most controversial expenditures:

1. University of Michigan’s DEI Bureaucracy

The University of Michigan has significantly expanded its DEI programs, dedicating over $30 million in the 2024 academic year to employ 241 DEI staff members—up from 142 in the previous year. Instead of focusing on academic excellence, critics argue that these funds are being used to push ideological agendas that do little to benefit students. The bloated DEI bureaucracy is viewed as an avenue for indoctrination rather than education. (New York Post)

2. Michigan State University’s DEI-Driven Spending

Michigan State University (MSU) has also diverted significant resources into DEI initiatives, distributing over $300,000 in “inclusive excellence” grants and spending $45.2 million on “diverse suppliers.” Many question the necessity of these initiatives, arguing that DEI programs often prioritize racial and gender quotas over merit and fairness. The university also implemented DEI-focused curricular changes in Health Sciences, raising concerns about whether political ideology is replacing scientific integrity. (MSU Inclusion)

3. Statewide LGBTQ+ Initiatives

The Michigan Department of Education has implemented workshops such as “A Silent Crisis: Creating Safe Schools for Sexual Minority Youth” to improve school climates for LGBTQ+ students. While aiming to reduce harassment, some argue these programs may introduce contentious topics into educational settings, potentially sidelining parental input. State of Michigan | Michigan.gov

Critics argue that these investments may channel taxpayer funds into initiatives that align with specific political ideologies, potentially marginalizing alternative viewpoints and fostering division.

4. Funding for Transgender Studies

Significant investments have been made in transgender-related research:

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grants: The University of Michigan received a $532,185 grant from the NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to study the effects of testosterone treatment on male rats’ fertility. Critics question the applicability of such studies to human health and the justification for their funding. AAAS

  • MSU Faculty Research: An MSU faculty member received a $60,000 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to explore the experiences of transgender individuals seeking reproductive care since the mid-20th century. This allocation is prioritizing niche research over broader educational needs. sociology.msu.edu

5. The HOPE Fund Grants

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan’s HOPE Fund has awarded over 170 grants totaling more than $2.5 million to nonprofit organizations serving the LGBTQ+ community in the region.  CFSEM

6. State Budget Allocation for LGBTQ+ Health Disparities

The 2023-2024 Michigan state budget included a historic $10 million allocation to address health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ residents.  Michigan Senate Democrats

Estimated Total Expenditures

Based on the available data, the total known expenditures on DEI, LGBTQ+, and transgender programs in Michigan include:

These figures amount to a total of approximately $50.5 million. It is important to note that this estimate does not encompass all DEI and LGBTQ+ related expenditures across the state, as comprehensive data from all institutions and programs are not readily available.

Taxpayer Money Fueling Political Activism?

The Michigan Senate recently passed a spending plan that critics say redirects taxpayer money into DEI and LGBTQ+ initiatives disguised as social programs. While exact allocations remain unclear, past patterns suggest that a portion of these funds will be funneled into activist organizations known for pushing radical agendas, organizing protests, and lobbying for divisive policies rather than addressing real economic or infrastructure concerns. (Michigan Public)

The millions being poured into these programs could instead be used for essential services, such as improving Michigan’s crumbling roads, public safety, or education reform. Instead, the government appears more focused on funding ideological projects that divide communities rather than unite them. As public scrutiny grows, many Michigan taxpayers are demanding accountability and questioning whether these investments are truly in the state’s best interest.
