Election Integrity Under Attack: Jocelyn Benson and the Democrat Push Against Citizenship Verification

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is once again proving that Democrats will stop at nothing to weaken election security and open the door to fraud. In her latest move, Benson has come out against a voter citizenship proposal that would require voters to prove their citizenship before casting a ballot. Instead of prioritizing election integrity, Benson is echoing typical Democrat talking points—claiming that the proposal is “burdensome” and “unnecessary.”

This is the same Jocelyn Benson who, during the 2020 election, oversaw chaotic and suspicious election processes in Michigan, ignored serious concerns about ballot security, and fought against commonsense reforms like requiring voter ID. Now, as she positions herself for a 2026 gubernatorial run, she is doubling down on the Democrat agenda to make it easier for non-citizens to vote while making it harder to verify the legitimacy of Michigan’s elections.

Citizenship Verification: A No-Brainer for Election Security

The SAVE Act, currently being debated at the federal level, would require voters to register in person with one of the following documents:

  • A birth certificate

  • A U.S. passport

  • A naturalization certificate

Shockingly, Benson and Michigan Democrats oppose this basic safeguard. They argue that it would “disenfranchise” voters and create “barriers” to voting. But let’s be clear: Only U.S. citizens have the right to vote in U.S. elections. What Benson and her allies won’t admit is that their real goal is to keep the system open to potential fraud by allowing non-citizens and unverified voters to cast ballots.

Benson’s Excuses Don’t Hold Up

Benson claims that the SAVE Act would prevent 2.2 million women in Michigan from voting because their married names might not match their birth certificate. But this is nothing more than a scare tactic. Women have legally changed their names for decades and have always been able to update their documents accordingly. Requiring proper documentation is a simple administrative step—not a “voter suppression” scheme.

The Real Reason Democrats Oppose Citizenship Verification

The Democrat strategy is clear: Create loopholes in election laws, undermine voter ID requirements, and fight against any reforms that would ensure only legal citizens vote. This is the same playbook we saw in 2020, when Michigan’s election system was flooded with questionable mail-in ballots, signature verification was ignored, and poll watchers were restricted from observing the counting process.

Benson’s opposition to the SAVE Act is just another example of Democrats working against transparency and fairness in elections. Instead of strengthening voter confidence, they continue to push radical policies that benefit their party at the expense of election integrity.

The Path Forward: Protecting Michigan Elections

Michigan voters must demand that their elected officials prioritize election security over partisan politics. The right to vote is sacred, and it must be protected from fraud, manipulation, and exploitation. Requiring proof of citizenship is not voter suppression—it’s common sense.

Jocelyn Benson and Michigan Democrats are trying to frame this issue as an attack on “voting rights.” But the real attack is on America itself. Ensuring that only legal citizens vote in elections is the bare minimum that should be expected of a free and fair election system.

As the 2026 governor’s race approaches, Michigan voters must hold Benson accountable for her actions and make it clear that election fraud will not be tolerated.
